일제강점기를 살았던 시인 김소월(1902-1934)은 한(恨)의 슬픔과 회한, 그리고 견딤을 시에 담았습니다. 정종열의 곡은 그리움과 절망이 겹치는 이 시를 음화(word-painting)로 풀어내어, 내면의 동요를 강과 까마귀 같은 바깥의 상징과 이어 줍니다.Kim Sowol (1902-1934) wrote of han, the sorrow, regret and resilience of Japan's colonial era. Chong's setting amplifies the poem's duality of yearning and despair, with word-painting that links inner turmoil to outer symbols such as the river and the crows.

윤동주(1917-1945)는 일제강점기의 시인이자 독립운동가로, 섬세한 감수성과 양심에 대한 헌신으로 알려져 있습니다. 정종열의 곡은 첫 부분을 일부 반복하되 결말을 닫지 않고 남겨, 끝나지 않은 여운을 만듭니다.Yun Dong-ju (1917-1945), a poet and independence activist under Japanese colonial rule, is known for his sensitivity and commitment to conscience. Chong's setting partly repeats the opening and leaves the ending unfinished, evoking a lingering sense of unresolved emotion.

Arirang

경기 아리랑 기반Folk song, Gyeonggi Arirang

아리랑은 "아리랑", "아라리"라는 후렴만 공유하는 여러 노래를 아우르는 전통입니다. 정종열의 작품이 바탕으로 삼은 경기 아리랑은 세계에서 가장 널리 알려져 있으며, 선율은 1926년에 처음 녹음되었습니다. 그의 초기 합창곡으로, 5음음계 선율을 그대로 살리면서 서양 조성 화성과 결합했습니다.The Arirang tradition spans many songs that share only the refrain "Arirang" or "Arari." Gyeonggi Arirang, on which Chong's work is based, remains the most recognized worldwide; its melody was first recorded in 1926. Chong's earliest choral work keeps the pentatonic melody and joins it with Western tonal harmony.
